Uncovering Urban Tech Tour NYC

Intro to City Infrastructure & Hardware

New York City is often referred to as the “City that never sleeps.” In practice, there’s much truth to that statement, as many of the systems and tools in place to maintain the metropolis are on constantly, with little to no break period. In a situation where upwards of 8 million people depend on these systems to function properly, there needs to be order and process to thrive in these environments. Fortunately, the city is blessed with incredible infrastructure and machinery that enable New Yorkers and visitors alike the ability to live, work and enjoy New York.

The best way to comprehend the magnitude of this great feat though isn’t to watch online videos. Rather, you need to experience these modern marvels in action through our Uncovering Urban Tech Tours of NYC. This NYC Tech tour program for students brings you behind the scenes of local technology and manufacturing centers and districts to meet the people, places and machines responsible for “keeping the lights on.” Beyond the glitz and glamour some tech startups receive in the press (and featured on our NYC Startup Tours), it’s the tried and true processes that ultimately earn their keep in practical everyday application.

Our tech and innovation tours are based the core belief that students need to experience the most meaningful life lessons rather than learn them through textbooks or online articles.

We accomplish this in the following ways:

  • We actively build each program to suit the need and interests of each group.
  • We start with a basic framework and apply different applications of technology through site visits, explorations, activities and workshops to develop a well-rounded perspective.
  • Unique to our student tours is our leadership module, which is incorporated into each aspect of the program. We help energize your group by applying frameworks that allow each student to question and discover what aspects of technology are they most interested in. We then work together as a group to help apply the lessons learned at each location to develop a “mini-roadmap” towards their potential career interest. This module takes place before and after each session and during the group’s transit time between locations aboard your vehicle (chartered bus or van preferred).

Our hands-on, hybrid learning perspective allows each student the opportunity to not only experience technology but learn how to apply what they learn to their own lives.

Students will experience two sides of technology through our Uncovering Urban Tech Tour of NYC:

INFRASTRUCTURE: Explore a former industrial district turned innovation center, learning about the systems and machinery required to operate daily operations. Students will leave an appreciation of how technology has shaped and will continue to shape the future of the city through their visit.

HARDWARE: Visit a local tech, metal and crafts workspace, home to entrepreneurs, hobbyists and educators. Here, you’ll see how everyday tech hardware is crafted by hand. This program may include an interactive workshop activity involving circuits or metal.
